An important historical monument, Rotonda of St. George is an ancient and very interesting building in Thessaloniki which dates back prior to the beginning of the fourth century AD. The Rotonda used to be part of the Galerius complex and later became a Christian church under the reign of emperor Theodossios, it also used to be the cathedral church of the city for more than 1100 years. The monument has a 24.5 cm in diameter dome, which is decorated with colourful marbles and wall mosaics. Today it is the official church of the local university and is used for special ceremonies honouring Saint George.
